Step 1: Elevate the Vehicle Safely
Lift the vehicle using a high-quality jack and secure it on jack stands. Never work under a car supported only by a hydraulic jack. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat, level surface and engage the parking brake.
Step 2: Spray Penetrating Oil
Exhaust bolts live in a harsh environment of extreme heat and road salt, meaning they are almost always rusted shut. Locate the bolts on the flanges holding the old catalytic converter in place. Spray them generously with penetrating oil and let it sit for at least 15-30 minutes.
Step 3: Remove the O2 Sensors
Your catalytic converter will have at least two O2 sensors attached to it (one upstream, one downstream). You can either transfer your old ones to the new unit (requires a special slotted O2 sensor socket to avoid cutting the wires), or simply buy new sensors to install with the new converter.
Locate the oxygen sensors plugged into or near the catalytic converter. Disconnect the wiring harnesses, then use the O2 sensor socket to carefully unscrew the sensors from the exhaust pipe. Set them safely aside (or prepare your new replacement sensors).
Step 4: Unbolt and Remove the Old Converter
Using your socket set and a breaker bar if necessary, unbolt the flanges connecting the catalytic converter to the engine manifold/header and the rear exhaust pipe. Once the bolts are removed, carefully slide the old converter out. Be sure to remove and discard any old gaskets.

Once aligned, tighten the bolts down evenly to the manufacturer's torque specifications.
Step 6: Reinstall O2 Sensors and Break-In
Thread the O2 sensors into the new converter, tighten them down, and plug the wiring harnesses back in. Finally, lower the car off the jack stands and perform the proper catalytic converter break-in procedure (idling the car to temp, then holding at 2,500 RPMs for two minutes) to cure the internal matting.
